Compared with the criticism of the socialist revolution in Russia and the Soviet Union delivered by Quiet Flows the Don, Dr. Zhivago's is mild.

Both told the story of a somewhat out of touch man, who thought that he owed some loyalty to the old regime, and who was roundly defeated or frustrated by the revolution and abused by its excesses. Both men chose to give up their resistance, and accept the judgment of the new. Their circumstances aroused the sympathy of even the hardest revolutionaries.

Their similarity ends there, however. Quiet Flows the Don became a revolutionary classic. Laurels showered upon the novel, the movie and their authors and Comrade Stalin became a steadfast fan of them.

However, the Dr. Zhivago suffered. Khrushchev was no Stalin. To be fair, given his personal experience, his might have had a healthy sympathy. However, whatever he genuinely felt, the Soviet regime after Stalin didn't know that Dr. Zhivago was the kind of character that socialism needed to sustain itself.

As a kind intellectual, he was loved by a beautiful Russian woman, who was no less than the image of Russia itself. She was loved by a nervously radical revolutionary, but she could not love him. She was loved by a counter revolutionary, but she could not love him, either. However, she loved this kind, weak and poetic Dr. Zhivago, who didn't love the revolution, but somehow managed to comprehend it, and accept it, reluctantly, of course.

Dr. Zhivago's reluctance was no worse than the Don rebels'. The circumstances of both warrant the revolution's most profound tolerance. However, in the harsh environment of Russia and the Soviet Union, tolerance was not a common commodity. Comrade Stalin, in the end, could only live that long.
